As you can no doubt tell by the title/motto, I was once, albeit a long time ago, a Girl Guide. In the last week, I have come across the same proverb three times, it goes something like this:
" Fail to prepare and you had better prepare to fail"
- and since,
"Once is an instance, twice may be an accident, but three or more times makes a pattern"
~ Diane Ackerman, By Nature's Design.
I figured that the Universe was trying to tell me something and that I had better spend the day in my binding workshop (above), preparing paper to take with me on Monday, when I leave to spend the next month in Provence. No, not a year, just a month!
Some people might consider the preparation of blank pages to form the text block of future books and journals a boring activity, but I REALLY like it! After you have been involved in the process for a little while, it becomes almost like a meditation, and the careful folding and smoothing of the paper with the bone folder is very soothing. I find that I have to be calm and attentive - in the right frame of mind, or else things do not go well, the paper coggles and the pages do not sit together properly.
What are you preparing for and why do you like it?
